What You Need to Know About Waxes

Waxes are often misunderstood in the car wash industry. In car washing, they are used to protect. The chemical and physical properties of waxes differ and vary. How the waxes are gathered, produced, and refined affects the properties and composition. As well, other ingredients used in the overall formulation affect the properties of true waxes.

There are four general categories of waxes:
1.) Mineral waxes which use mineral seal oil. These waxes tend to rinse off easily and volatilise quickly.

2.) Medium quality waxes that uses a synthetic wax and mineral seal oil. This combination tends to last a bit longer but wears quickly.

3.) High quality synthetic waxes which are a combination of synthetic and polymer based wax. These can generally outlast all other synthetic waxes. Synthetic waxes can often be referred to as sealants.

4.) Natural waxes, derived from trees such as Carnauba wax.

You've probably heard of Carnauba wax before, a product crafted straight from Brazilian palm trees. Most highly regarded vehicle waxes are crafted with some level of Carnauba in the formula. Carnauba wax is also the choice material among professionals and enthusiasts alike in automatic and self-serve car washes. Carnauba wax produces an unmistakable shine with incredible depth that synthetic waxes just can't match. It creates a rich, warm glow and transforms the paint into a deep, liquid pool that shimmers under changing light conditions. The more carnauba wax, the more shine. It’s a look you can “feel!”

Sometimes it can be tough to tell whether you’re getting a good quality wax. Two clues can be just as simple as looking at the price and another clue is whether it comes off quickly after a high pressure rinse. We often refer to this as “brake”. The faster the water comes off in a high pressure rinse, the quicker the wax dries which results in less spotting. Or if you're not sure you can always ask your supplier for the type of protectant being applied.
