GC Normally Closed (NC) Solenoids are standard components on all Prowash iWash Self-Serve carwash pump stands.
On the iWash Classic and iWash ADVANCE, these solenoids control hot and cold-water feed to the high-pressure CAT pumps. On the Classic model, they are also responsible for Spot Free water delivery.
GC solenoids are also used on older equipment and can serve as a universal 1/2” low pressure solenoid replacement throughout your wash. The original PDQ LaserWash 360 pump stands use this solenoid as well for hot and cold-water inlets on the solutions pump. However, make note that one of these is Normally Open (NO) while the other is Normally Closed (NC).
While these solenoids are designed for thousands of cycles, their diaphragms can eventually perish, distort, crack, or tear. For this reason, if you experience leaks in a bay or notice water starvation at your pump, it’s essential to inspect and replace the solenoid as needed. Failing to maintain your solenoids can lead to costly damage. A leaking solenoid not only wastes water but can also cause tracking on the solenoid seat. Once tracking develops, the solenoid cannot be restored (even with a new kit) because it will no longer seal properly. If a GC solenoid fails to open, it can starve your pump of water, potentially damaging the pump itself.
Above all, a functioning GC solenoid is critical to maintaining customer satisfaction. Proper operation ensures maximum pressure and reliable water delivery. A solenoid that fails to open will reduce performance, while a leaking solenoid can dilute low pressure products like Tyre & Engine Cleaner or Presoak, resulting in poor in bay results.
The diaphragm shown in the component on the right has become distorted and is leaking through its centre. This damage is causing the solenoid to fail to open.

The plunger seal (below) was so swollen the solenoid failed to open. It should be flush with the end of the plunger (shown in image following showing a brand-new GC Solenoid). The GC Solenoid kit comes with a plunger seal, this should also be replaced when repairing the solenoid.

The following GC solenoid had been leaking for an extended period, causing tracking across the seat and the entire solenoid needed replacing.

You can see the difference old (rough seat) vs new (smooth seat).
